Porsche Cayenne S E-Hybrid

Porsche’s High-Performance Hybrid SUV

Last year it was reported that Porsche was planning to replace their hybrid Cayenne SUV with a unique plug-in hybrid, and that is exactly what they did. The Cayenne family now includes 7 different models, and arguably the most interesting is their new “S E-Hybrid”. The Cayenne S E-Hybrid is not only a high performance SUV, but also a super-low emission hybrid-electric luxury family vehicle. That is a mouthful, but worth every syllable. Many reporters have described the Cayenne S E-Hybrid as the equivalent of “having your cake and eating it too,” when it comes to fuel-efficient SUV’s. Assuming that’s true, lucky owners will enjoy every bite.

Under the Hood

The Cayenne’s new hybrid system consists of a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 gas-powered engine that is combined with a 10.8 kWh lithium-ion battery. The gasoline engine puts out an impressive 333 horsepower and 325 pounds feet of torque, and that combines with 95 horsepower and 229 pounds feet of torque from the electric motor. That’s all matched with an 8-speed Tiptronic S transmission that offers steering wheel mounted paddle shifters as well. Porsche says the Cayenne S E-Hybrid will do 0-60 in just under 5.5 seconds and has a top speed of about 150 miles per hour.

All Cayenne models come standard with permanent all-wheel drive, but the S E-Hybrid also features a self-locking differential. Drivers will also find the S E-Hybrid equipped with the Porsche Traction Management (PTM) system which includes anti-slip regulation and automatic brake differential. The system is designed with a rear-wheel/front-wheel bias of 60/40, so if the system senses any wheel slipping it will automatically send additional torque to that axle so the SUV will get the most traction possible. Exceptional handling and a smooth ride are provided by the double-wishbone front and aluminum multi-axle rear suspension.

The Porsche Cayenne S E-Hybrid’s Interior

In true Porsche fashion, no luxuries were spared when designing the interior of this vehicle. The front offers the driver and passenger a sculpted sport seat with excellent support and 8-way adjustment. The Cayenne S E-Hybrid also comes standard with a heated steering wheel and three-level heated front seats. The back seat can fold flat with a 40/20/40 split and a center armrest.

Technology is rampant in the Cayenne S E-Hybrid. An array of toggles, dials, and buttons are housed in the center console, and it also features five round gauges with a center tachometer, a 4.8 inch display touch screen, in-door bottle holders, dual cup holders, rain sensing wipers, dual-zone climate controls, and more. Soft-close doors are available as well as a comfort lighting package that includes dimmable ambient lighting in the roof console and door panels, LED reading lights for the rear passengers, additional courtesy lights on the exterior mirrors, and an additional 12-volt socket in the rear center console.

Trunk and storage space is excellent overall, although there is a small amount of space lost in the back because of the standard plug-in accessory bag. There are storage compartments on the back of both front seats as well as a convenient drawer under both the driver and passenger seats. Also, the glove compartment is cooled by the climate control system, which can come in very handy during summer months and especially in warmer climates.

The Cayenne S E-Hybrid comes standard with adaptive cruise control and the Porsche Active Safe (PAS) system. The adaptive cruise control system monitors the road up to 650 feet ahead of the vehicle, when cruise control is enabled, by using a radar system housed in the central air intake. If you approach a vehicle that is moving slower than your cruise control speed, the Cayenne S E-Hybrid will automatically apply gentle breaking until the preset distance is maintained. However, if heavier breaking is required the driver will still have to intervene. The adaptive cruise control will continue to slow the vehicles speed down to a full stop if necessary, of if the car in front begins accelerating again – the Cayenne S E-Hybrid can automatically return to your chosen driving speed. If the driver chooses, there is also a Stop & Go function that will apply the brakes and then speed up again while in congested traffic. As an additional safety feature, the PAS system will visually and audibly warn the driver when their intervention is necessary. It can also intervene and apply more pressure to the brakes depending on the situation.

The Porsche Cayenne S E-Hybrid also comes with many other assistance features including Lane Departure Warning, which uses a camera to detect lane markings and makes an audible warning if the vehicle is close to straying outside of the lane. Lane Change Assist also comes standard and alerts the driver to other vehicles in its blind spot, or vehicles approaching very quickly, when traveling over about 18 mph. Surround View cameras monitor all four sides of the vehicle and can display a bird’s eye view of the SUV on the PCM if the driver so chooses. ParkAssist is also standard and will provide acoustic signals when an obstacle is in front of or behind the vehicle while parking. Bottom line…this vehicle is loaded with safety technologies.

With a starting price tag of $76,400, the Cayenne S E-Hybrid is one of the most expensive vehicles in its class, but Porsche definitely includes plenty of luxurious amenities for the money. Excellent performance, top-quality materials, and a smooth ride are exactly what consumer have come to expect from Porsche, and the Cayenne S E-Hybrid delivers that and more. Fuel efficiency has yet to be officially announced at the time of this review, but Porsche is expected to give more details in the next few months so check back for updates.
