Since adding Google Analytics to our most popular hybrid blogs and websites about 18 months ago, it has been interesting to gain some insight into our visitor traffic. Now, with several million page views of data, we are taking a closer look at how people find us, what countries, cities, and states they come from, which hybrid vehicles and articles are searched for and viewed the most, and so much more.
Most of our 50 plus hybrid-electric related properties reside on .com domains (although a few are .net, .org, and .us), which probably skews our data towards people searching from the United States. Also, many of our rankings for phrases like hybrid suv, hybrid cars, Toyota Prius, hybrid trucks, etc. are strong not only on Google.com but also on Google.ca (Canada), Google.de (Germany) and other country specific search engines. This results in visitors from all over the world, including nearly 200 countries.
Since we find this information useful, we thought our visitors might also enjoy learning where our global traffic is concentrated. Here are the top 10 and top 25 countries that brought visitors to our sites during the past year:
1. United States
2. Canada
3. United Kingdom
4. Germany
5. Japan
6. India
7. Australia
8. Greece
9. Netherlands
10. Philippines
Rounding out the top 25 are Puerto Rico, Mexico, France, Italy, Iraq, Spain, Romania, Switzerland, South Korea, Slovokia, Sweden, Singapore, Norway, China, and Belgium.
Searches from the U.S. accounted for nearly 75% of all visitor traffic during the past 12 months. Digging a bit deeper reveals that traffic from the states is closely matched to state population rankings (according to census.gov). A few surprises include the fact that while Michigan is the 8th most populated state, it ranks 17th in terms of our hybrid auto searches. Maybe people who live in Michigan are the most loyal to Ford, GM, and Chrysler resulting in fewer searches for hybrids made by Toyota, Honda, Lexus, Nissan and others?
1. California (1)
2. New York (3)
3. Texas (2)
4. Florida (4)
5. Illinois (5)
6. Pennsylvania (6)
7. Virginia (12)
8. New Jersey (11)
9. Washington (13)
10. Massachusetts (15)
Following these top ten states are Georgia (9), North Carolina (10), Ohio (7), Colorado (22), Maryland (19), Arizona (14), Michigan (8), Minnesota (21), Oregon (27), Missouri (18), Wisconsin (20), Connecticut (29), Tennessee (17), Indiana (16), and Iowa (30).
Based on these numbers, it seems that the number of people researching hybrid cars on a per capita basis is fairly consistent across the nation. This was also the case when we compiled our hybrid search data in February of 2008. Since then, the biggest mover was Virginia (up from #10 to #7).
If you are interested in other statistics we might be able to provide, whether it’s for a research project or simply because you’re curious, leave a comment and we’ll get back to the number crunching!
