The hybrid version of the 2008 Mercury Mariner seems to have a lot going for it, and at the same time it’s stuck with several shortcomings. A sibling of the hybrid Ford Escape and hybrid Mazda Tribute, the Mariner hybrid is the most expensive of the three - starting at around $26,000 for the two wheel drive model and about $27,500 for the all wheel drive version. Loaded up, you should expect to shell out in the ball park of $32K.
The history of the Mercury Mariner hybrid suv began in 2005, as a 2006 model year. During it’s first full year of production, less than 1,500 Mariner hybrids were sold (compared to over 10,000 Escape hybrids). Sales have been better in 2007, already exceeding 2,500 through August.
Changes for 2008 include the introduction of the 2 wheel drive version as well as several updates to it’s exterior (new hood, tail lamps, and removal of lower bodyside cladding). Less obvious are the thicker windows, added insulation in door panels, and some heavier carpeting - all in an effort to reduce cabin noise levels. Unchanged are the powertrain options, which include a 2.3 liter-4 cylinder and a 3.0 liter-V6.
Critics of Mercury’s Hybrid SUV point to it’s noisy gas engine, a lack of overall refinement when compared to other suv’s in it’s class, and the fact that there is no stability control system offered in the hybrid version (expect stability control in the 2009 changes). At the same time, when looking for a hybrid suv for under $30,000 - the Mariner is one of the only options currently available. Combine that with comfortable seating for five, and it becomes a viable green alternative for families who can’t squeeze into a Prius.
