QX60 Hybrid

The First Three-Row Midsized Crossover by Infiniti

Families who are looking for a fuel efficient SUV that offers three-row seating now have a new choice-the Infiniti QX60 Hybrid. The QX60 is a seven-passenger luxury mid-size crossover SUV that was introduced by Infiniti, the luxury division of Japanese automaker Nissan, in the spring of 2012 as a 2013 model. It debuted as the Infiniti JX and it kept that name for 2012 and 2013, but in keeping with Infiniti’s new naming system for all 2014 models, in which all cars begin with Q and all SUV’s begin with QX, it was renamed the QX60.

The 2013 model, known as the JX35, was equipped with a 3.5 liter V6 gasoline powered engine. It also came with a continuously variable transmission. All models were equipped with FWD and an AWD option was also available. It got an EPA estimated 18 miles per gallon city and 24 highway. In order to keep up with the demand for vehicles with better fuel economy, Infiniti decided to give consumers a hybrid option starting with the 2014 model.

The QX60 Hybrid is Born

Amazingly, the QX60 Hybrid is over 16 feet long and offers drivers seven-passenger seating and lots of cargo space, yet it still get a combined 26 miles per gallon. That’s the same fuel economy as the much smaller Honda CR-V and the Toyota RAV4, and neither of those vehicles offers third-row seating. It is a gasoline-electric hybrid vehicle and it was rated to have the second best gas mileage of any 2014 sport utility vehicle with three rows of seating.

The QX60 received a 5 out of 5 stars rating in the federal governments crash tests as well. Likewise, the non-hybrid version is recommended by Consumer Reports, who rated the reliability of the vehicle as average. The hybrid version is still too new to receive a reliability rating. Infiniti also made sure that this vehicle came standard with top of the line safety features including front, rear, and third row head airbags, emergency breaking assist, dusk sensing headlamps, a post-collision safety system, and , traction and stability control.

Similarly, there are many safety features available as add-ons to the QX60 Hybrid that are not offered on other three-row, hybrid SUVs. These include backup collision intervention that can automatically stop the SUV if the sensors detect that the vehicle is backing up into an obstacle, and a blind spot monitoring system which not only warns the driver that another car is approaching in the SUV’s blind spot, but it can also intervene to try and keep the QX60 Hybrid from turning into the adjacent vehicle.

As far as the overall drive quality of the QX60 Hybrid, it is a bit bulky in its handling in tight spaces, and is less than agile, but that is to be expected with such a large vehicle. The suspension is a bit on the soft side, but does a fine job of keeping the most severe road bumps away from passengers. The continuously variable transmission works well to deliver power without a lot of hassle and added noise, although a minimal amount of road and wind noise is noticeable in the cabin.

Thanks to the instant-on torque from the 15-kilowatt electric motor, drivers will notice the power of this vehicle immediately. The transitions between the supercharged double overhead cam four cylinder gasoline engine and the electric power are virtually imperceptible. The system puts out a total of 250 horsepower, which compares almost equally with the 265 horses delivered by the V-6 engine of the non-hybrid QX60. The hybrid system also peaks at 243 foot-pounds of torque, and that again compares nicely with the 248 foot-pounds in a non-hybrid QX60.

Interior Features of the QX60 Hybrid

The goal for the QX60 Hybrid’s interior must have been luxury because it comes equipped with everything a driver could need or want and lots of amenities to keep passengers comfortable as well. Starting with the front seats buyers will notice the gorgeous leather and lots of available functions including a multi-level heating driver and passenger seat, an 8-way power driver seat and a 6-way power passenger seat, as well as manual adjustable lumbar support in the driver’s seat.

The rear seats offer a split-folding rear seatback, reclining rear seats, a fold-out storage center armrest, rear ventilation ducts with fan control, and a manual folding split-bench third row seat. The second-row legroom of 41.7 inches is definitely noteworthy, plus there is 30.8 inches of legroom in the third row. Another added bonus is that the second and third rows can be folded into the floor, which makes loading cargo very easy, and gives the buyer much more room to haul freight.

The 2014 QX60 also offers lots of features for convenience and comfort that include:
• An overhead console with storage
• Cup holders in the front, rear, and third rows
• Audio and cruise control settings located on the steering wheel
• A rear view camera
• Three zone climate control
• An interior air filtration system
• Speed sensitive volume control
• USB connection

There are only a few true competitors for the QX60 that are comparable gasoline-electric hybrid SUVs with three rows of seats. But the QX60 has something more to offer because it wears a luxury brand name, and standard features on every QX60 Hybrid include leather-trimmed seats, heated front seats, power moonroof, rearview camera, three-zone automatic climate control, and a power rear liftgate. These features plus its many other added benefits make the QX60 Hybrid a leader in its class.

With a starting manufacturer’s suggested retail price of the base model with front-wheel drive placed at $47,495, some consumers may think the QX60 hybrid isn’t the best deal. However, this starting price is only $3,000 more than the starting price of its non-hybrid equivalent, which is much less of a gap than many of its competitors. And, for all the added passenger and cargo room plus the additional luxury features, this seven-passenger hybrid is priced very reasonably, and will give families, or commuters, who are looking for lots of space and better gas mileage exactly what they are searching for.
