The hybrid 2008 Chevrolet Tahoes are here! The wait is finally over for those in the market to buy the largest hybrid SUV in the world, and this version of the Tahoe is supposed to get about 20 mpg. We’ve been watching several websites and search engines closely since early January, and the first available models we’ve located online are currently on eBayMotors. A few days ago, we started seeing some similar listings, but they were only for those who wanted to pre-order a hybrid model. Now, we are seeing a couple of dealers who actually have one on their lots.
Based on the dealer pricing we’ve seen so far, a 2008 hybrid Tahoe starts at just under $53,000. On the Chevrolet website, they show prices starting at $50,490 for the 2WD and $53,295 for the 4X4. In either case, it’s a chunk of change - but you might also recall that the LA Auto Show dubbed it the ‘08 Green Car of the Year.
And, this mammoth sport utility vehicle is built to haul your big boat, or your big family (up to 8 people). Now the watch begins for the 2008 hybrid GMC Yukon and the 2009 Saturn Vue, both due out later this year. Those milestones should be followed by the unveiling of the 2009 hybrid Escalade. All of these hybrids share GM’s two-mode hybrid system. Check out the video if you’re interested.

The hybrids are beautiful. But, next to a high-end regular Tahoe you will notice that there are no fog lights in air dam, and the mirror, door handles are colored same as body paint (not chromed), and grill is not chrome (at least on black and white models). These are cosmetic details. You will also notice there is no roof rack. My local dealer said Chevy does not recommend installing them and refused to install them on the truck I wanted. They were unable to clarify whether there is a structural issue preventing installation or whether it is simply because the roof racks will alter the aerodynamic profile Chevy worked so hard to improve, and therefore negatively impact gas mileage. Anyway, I left the dealer without buying the Tahoe Hybrid, called Chevy customer service and marketing and neither could answer the question as to why Chevy was not recommending installation of the racks. They told me they would get an answer for me in 3 business days. I am still waiting.
ISPHome,
Sounds like an interesting development with hybrid Tahoe roof racks. Please be sure to keep us posted if you hear back from them. I’ll also try to do some research to see if it is structural or aerodynamic.
